Mohbad: Royalty issues would have been resolved if late singer was our member – PMAN

The president of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN), Pretty Okafor, has said if the late musician, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba popularly known as Mohbad, was its member, the controversies on issues of royalties with his former record label, Marlian Records would have been amicably resolved.

He said this when he appeared before a House of Representatives panel probing Mohbad’s death, particularly the allegations of harassment and unpaid royalties.

Okafor regretted that the new crop of musicians had failed to see the need to join PMAN, which he said had numerous benefits for them, including resolving contractual issues between musicians and record labels.

He encouraged musicians, especially the younger ones, to become active members of the association, which he said was a trade union.

He said: “We engage the Music Managers Association of Nigeria. We engage the record label association of Nigeria and we also engage the artists. That is why it is difficult to manage the crisis that erupted now. Some of them believe that PMAN is archaic. Some of them believe that it is only for old people. For some of them, the record labels manipulate their psyche not to make them stay under the authority of PMAN which is why this kind of crisis emerged.

Evening Roundup: Stories making waves in The Nation – The Nation0.00 / 0.00

“So if we reach out to the record label association they will need to reach out to their artists. They must be a member of PMAN so that we can protect their interests and also protect the interest of the record label owners because they are supposed to get certification from PMAN.

“The structure has been that the record label association and record label owners must be registered members of the union so that they can be monitored and guided. Same with the musicians. Also, the music managers are supposed to be part.

“We have a lot of people under PMAN including Tuface, MI, Banky, and so on. They all belong to the association. But the younger ones maybe their managers and record labels were not passing positive messages to them and that is why it was difficult for them to join the union.

“So when the crisis started I personally wanted to interfere but I could not …. That is the main reason for being a PMAN member. Because of contractual issues. PMAN like I said the record labels are also registered certified carriers of PMAN certificate to operate the record label. Then the artists are members. So the burden is on PMAN to now call the record labels to the table and call the artist and his management to the table and address it. Because we have a legal team, they handle that.”

PRETTY OKAFOR RE-ELECTED UNOPPOSED AS PMAN PRESIDENT

Mr. Pretty Okafor, the incumbent President of the Performing Musicians Employers’ Association Of Nigeria, PMAN has been reelected to continue as the head of the musicians’ union body for another four years.

The veteran musician was returned unopposed by the delegates from the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory during the 2023 National Delegates Conference of the body held Tuesday 24 October at the Association’s headquarters in Lekki, Lagos.

Okafor was announced the winner of the election by the electoral chairman with a total vote of 50.

Also reelected to serve for another four years as members of the PMAN National Executive Committee were Sunny Neji as the 1st Vice President, Zaaki Azzay as 2nd Vice President, Baba J.F.O as Treasurer, Michael Stevens (Ruggedman) as Chairman, Media Committee/Ex officio, Boniface Itodo (Aitabonny) as General Secretary and Fada Bem Paul (Bempee) as Assistant General Secretary.

Speaking with our correspondent after the election and delegates conference, Okafor explained that his re-election was as a result of pressure from some members of the association as he didn’t want to re-contest as PMAN President.

According to him, he had to change his mind when five State chapters purchased a form for him and insisted he must run for another term.

“I had resisted the pressure to run after running the association for some years now. My personal businesses are fast growing and I need time to pay more attention to them. But the whole thing became an issue when our General Secretary told members that I have since submitted documents to indicate my decision not to re-contest. This became a big issue as some members were even in tears and refused to sit down until I rescind my earlier decision not to run again. When I found out about this, I decided to put my business aside, believing that the interest of PMAN was more significant than my interest,” Okafor said.

The PMAN leader stated that his visible achievements over the years earned him the trust of every member which led to his unopposed re-election.

He said, “I would say there was no contest in the real sense of it as my return was more of an adoption than an election. I think they decided to bring me back as PMAN President because of my achievements over the years. As they have never witnessed what has happened in PMAN in recent years. More so, PMAN now has a solid structure as an institution while the union can now boast of its radio station and other investments in the real estate and hospitality that would fetch money for the association and its members. So, it was so hard for them to let me go.”

Okafor, a fine arts graduate of Yaba College of Technology, is widely acknowledged as the pioneer of the Afro-hip-hop genre in the late 1980s.

He was renowned for his musical fame with ‘Junior and Pretty,’ however, he gained even greater popularity as PMAN president.

He assumed office in October 2016, and ever since, Okafor has steered the association’s affairs and achieved significant milestones during his tenure.

Earlier before the PMAN national conference, Ms. Aralola Sherifat Olamuyiwa, Nigeria’s foremost female drummer popularly known as ‘Ara,’ was also appointed as the governor of the Lagos State Chapter of PMAN.

At the inauguration ceremony, Okafor who announced her appointment and presented her certificate of appointment at the Nigeria Music House in Lagos, said the choice of Ara to lead Lagos Chapter is very strategic as she was chosen because of her work ethic and appeals to the cross-generational demography of artistes.

Speaking about her plans for the Lagos Chapter of the Union, Ara stated that her focus would be to make the state become more vibrant and create awareness on the significance of PMAN to the Gen Z generation and every other artist yet to join the association.

Ara also took to her Instagram account to announce her new appointment.

“Thank you to God Almighty for a successful swearing-in ceremony today as PMAN Governor Lagos State Chapter,” she wrote with photos showing off her certificate.

The Performing Musicians Employers Association of Nigeria (PMAN) concluded its national elections on October 24, 2023, in Lagos, Nigeria

The Performing Musicians Employers Association of Nigeria (PMAN) concluded its national elections on October 24, 2023, in Lagos, Nigeria, featuring significant developments and changes within the leadership structure.

The elections witnessed a mix of unopposed returns, emotional decisions, and notable alterations in key positions. Notably, Pretty Okafor, amidst persistent pressure from delegates, was returned unopposed as the President of PMAN.

Okafor, who initially opted not to contest, yielded to the fervent requests of the state chapters, which rallied financial support for his election. Consequently, all other candidates for the presidency were disqualified as they failed to meet the financial membership requirements stipulated in the PMAN constitution.

In a similar vein, Suny Neji, the 1st Vice President, and Zaaki Azaay 2nd Vice President both retained their positions unopposed, owing to the disqualification of competing candidates for non-compliance with PMAN’s membership regulations.

Contrastingly, the incumbent National Treasurer, Asha Gangali, faced defeat in the election, resulting in the assumption of office by Baba Ojonugwa (JFO) as the new PMAN National Treasurer.

Additionally, Ruggedman was returned unopposed, securing his position without facing any contenders.

The General Secretary of PMAN in person of Boniface Itodo (Aita Bonny) was also reappointed and continues to serve in the same capacity.

Furthermore, Mr. Bem Faga (Bem P) was appointed as the Assistant General Secretary of PMAN, bringing fresh perspectives and support to the association’s administrative framework.

The recent PMAN national elections mark a pivotal moment for the organization, reflecting its commitment to upholding membership standards and ensuring the continued growth and prosperity of the Nigerian music industry.

Several PMAN state chapters purchased election forms and forcefully compelled Pretty Okafor to contest.

Failure to do so would have resulted in the stalling of the election process, as his absence in the leadership of PMAN was perceived as a potential hindrance to the association’s progress.
